Jim Catlin learned it at a formal dinner for new engineers at Hewlett-Packard. He and his wife were seated across from David Packard, but a towering centerpiece hid them all evening. Nobody spoke to the Catlins. They felt like the loneliest people in the room.
When the speech was over, Packard did not go back to his table. He crossed the room, took Jim's hand, and said, "I want to apologize for your experience tonight. This evening was to honor engineers like you. I am so glad that you have joined us. Welcome to HP."
Years later, Jim found that rule on Packard's list and laughed out loud. Packard had not only taken notice. He had understood. And he took action.
