How to cancel Speechify (and a free alternative)

Read-Along is our product. We wrote this guide because many people ask how to cancel, and we think you should be able to do it without a fight.

You can cancel Speechify whenever you like. The part that trips people up is where you cancel, because it depends on where you paid. This page follows Speechify's own help pages and the official Apple and Google instructions. Last checked: 26 October 2026. Screens change, so if something looks different, use the links to the source pages.

The Tortoise and the Hare — Aesop0:00 / 0:44

The Tortoise and the Hare, by Aesop.

A Hare one day ridiculed the short feet and slow pace of the Tortoise, who replied, laughing: "Though you be swift as the wind, I will beat you in a race." The Hare, believing her assertion to be simply impossible, assented to the proposal; and they agreed that the Fox should choose the course and fix the goal.

On the day appointed for the race the two started together. The Tortoise never for a moment stopped, but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course. The Hare, lying down by the wayside, fell fast asleep.

At last waking up, and moving as fast as he could, he saw the Tortoise had reached the goal, and was comfortably dozing after her fatigue.

Slow but steady wins the race.

What to know about billing

  • Cancelling stops the next charge and future charges. It does not refund earlier charges.
  • You keep Premium until your next billing date.
  • If you're on a free trial, cancelling before it ends prevents any charge. Speechify's terms say trials are currently three days unless the sign-up says otherwise.
  • Speechify's terms say fees for the current term are not refunded, and that Apple and Google purchases are final. Check the terms for the current wording.
  • Stuck? Speechify lists its support address on its help page. Keep a screenshot of your cancellation confirmation.

If you just want to read documents aloud, for free

Speechify is a polished app with many features. If all you need is to listen to a document, Read-Along is a free option. Upload a PDF, Word, ePub, RTF, ODT, Markdown, text or HTML file (up to 3 GB), or paste a web link. You get a page that reads aloud with each word highlighted, on a phone or a computer. You sign in with your email or phone, no password.

  • Read-Along gives you one document free every day, with no card. Premium has no daily limit and is $14.50 a month or $69 a year, and you can cancel it any time from Plan → Manage or cancel.

What Read-Along doesn't do yet

If you need those, Speechify may be the better fit, and that's fine.

  • It is a website, not an app: no iPhone or Android app, and no offline listening.
  • It reads in English. There is no wide choice of voices or languages, and no cloned voices.
  • It doesn't translate or score pronunciation.
  • Pages that are only scanned pictures may not read well; long tables of numbers and charts are left out of the narration.
  • Your free document is one a day, and a document takes about ten minutes to prepare rather than playing instantly.
  • It has no browser extension.

Questions

How do I cancel Speechify?

It depends on where you paid. On the web: log in at app.speechify.com, click your photo, then Settings, then Cancel Subscription. If you paid through the App Store or Google Play, cancel in your Apple or Google subscription settings instead.

Will I get a refund if I cancel?

Speechify's help page says cancelling only stops the next and future charges, not past ones. Its terms say fees for the current term are not refunded and that Apple and Google purchases are final. Check the current terms.

Can I keep using Speechify after I cancel?

According to Speechify, you keep Premium until your next billing date, or until your trial ends.

I deleted the app. Am I still being charged?

Possibly. Deleting an app does not cancel a subscription on Android (Google says so), and Apple subscriptions are also managed in Settings. Cancel in your Apple or Google subscriptions.

Is there a free way to listen to documents?

Read-Along gives you one free document a day with each word highlighted as it is read, and no card is needed. It has fewer features than Speechify (no app, no offline mode), so try the sample first.

Does Read-Along have a subscription I'd need to cancel?

Only if you choose Premium. The free document every day needs no card. Premium can be cancelled any time from Plan → Manage or cancel, and you keep it until the end of the time you paid for.
