New: listen to ePub books and phone photos

Can Kindle read my PDF aloud?

Probably not the way you hope. Amazon's help page for reading aloud in the Kindle app lists books from the Kindle store, borrowed books and books shared in your Family Library. It does not mention PDFs or your own documents (checked 2026-10-26). Read-Along does read your own PDF aloud, and lights up each word as it goes. Everyone gets one free document a day, no card needed. Premium has no daily limit and puts your documents first.

The Tortoise and the Hare — Aesop0:00 / 0:44

The Tortoise and the Hare, by Aesop.

A Hare one day ridiculed the short feet and slow pace of the Tortoise, who replied, laughing: "Though you be swift as the wind, I will beat you in a race." The Hare, believing her assertion to be simply impossible, assented to the proposal; and they agreed that the Fox should choose the course and fix the goal.

On the day appointed for the race the two started together. The Tortoise never for a moment stopped, but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course. The Hare, lying down by the wayside, fell fast asleep.

At last waking up, and moving as fast as he could, he saw the Tortoise had reached the goal, and was comfortably dozing after her fatigue.

Slow but steady wins the race.

What does Kindle read aloud?

Amazon's page on Assistive Reader, the read-aloud tool in the free Kindle app, says it works with Kindle books that have Enhanced Typesetting and that you bought, borrowed or were shared in your Family Library. It does highlight words while it reads. It says nothing about PDFs (checked 2026-10-26).

So will my own PDF work on Kindle?

We can't promise either way, because Amazon's page doesn't say. If you need it today, try your file on your own Kindle or app. If it doesn't read, Read-Along is a quick way to listen to it.

How do I hear my PDF with Read-Along?

Choose the PDF or paste a link to it, then sign in with your email or phone (a one-time code, no password) and we start it. A short document is ready in a few minutes; a long one takes about half as long as it takes to listen. We email you the link, or text it once if you signed in by phone and ticked the box. It opens in a web browser on your phone or computer, and each word lights up as it is spoken.

What does it cost?

Everyone gets one free document a day, no card needed. Premium has no daily limit and puts your documents first. Premium is $14.50 a month, or $69 a year. It renews until you cancel.

What are Read-Along's limits?

It reads English. It is a website, not a Kindle app, and it is not a place to buy books. Narration stops at about 3 hours. Handwriting does not work. If a file cannot be read, your free document is given back.
